The town is situated near the picturesque bend of the Minija River. Since 1540, Priekulė has been the largest settlement in the Klaipėda region. Here, the typical architecture of the Pomerania region's towns stands out. In the mid-19th century, amber was found near Priekulė. For centuries, there was a famous fish market called Strykis between Priekulė and Dreverna, attracting buyers from all over Samogitia.

Today, the town is valuable from an architectural and urbanistic perspective. The city center, formed in the mid-19th century, is characteristic of a typical larger town in the region of Little Lithuania, and in the late 16th century, the oldest Evangelical Lutheran parish in the Klaipėda region was established here.

Priekulė was home to J. F. Šrėderis and J. Traušis' Lithuanian publishing house and bead factory. In 1875, a railway complex was opened, and the postal service was established by the landlord L. Gleich.

Priekulė is known for its literary figures. The famous German writer E. Vichertas worked here, and the writer I. Simonaitytė lived and created here. In 1997, a monument "Šventvakarių Ėvė" was unveiled in the city center, commemorating not only one of the most prominent personalities in the Klaipėda region but also the history of Little Lithuania. Today, a memorial exhibition revealing the writer's connections with the local way of life and ethnography is arranged in the writer's house.

The Minija River bank contributes to the excellent impression of the town. Priekulė and its surroundings abound in natural landmarks. In Priekulė, on the right bank bend of the Minija River, there is Vingio Park. The park has elements of landscape style and covers a slightly undulating 13 hectares. Near Priekulė, in the 19th century, Kliošiai Park was established, where the printing magnate J. F. Šrėderis is buried. It is a picturesque area with winding paths.

In Priekulė, two branches of the Gargždai Regional Museum are located: the Ieva Simonaitytė Memorial Museum and the Museum of the History of Freedom Struggles and Exile.
