Vilkija, called the Lithuanian Alps, a town in Kaunas district, hides great treasures. This is an ethnographic heritage collected by the ethnographer Antanas Juška. It is still being stored in Antanas and Jonas Juška Ethnic Culture Museum. The 300 year old building that previously used to provide the roof to church servants, and shelter to the famous Lithuanian public figures, whereas today it is a cultural centre and a living yearbook of history.

In 1864 the priest A. Juška arrived to Vilkija to work as a priest and settled in the rectory, the present Ethnic Culture Museum. He loved the Lithuanian word and songs. While living in the Juška place, his entire room was lashed with strings with Lithuanian words hanging on them, which subsequently appeared in Polish-Lithuanian and Latvian-Lithuanian-Polish dictionaries and the alphabet book "Abecela". Priest Antanas was simply delighted with the Lithuanian folk music. He recorded over 7,000 songs and 2,000 melodies, and even organised elections in Vilkija: a girl possessing the thickest hair, singing the most beautiful song, dancing the most cheerful dance and making the most delicious dish would be elected as the Queen of Songs.

Just like his brother, J. Juška felt an infinite love to the Lithuanian language and devoted his work to it. In 1861 he published an important scientific work "Lithuanian Writing or Orthography of the Lithuanian Language", which classified Lithuanian dialects in more detail and analysed the orthography of the mother tongue. It was him who suggested use of the letters š, č and v instead of sz, cz and w. Jonas Juška also contributed to the preparation of his brother's collection of songs and editing of the Lithuanian language vocabulary.

"The memory of the brothers Juška will stay as long as the Lithuanian nation exists and as long as there are scientists who are interested in the phenomena of their spiritual and social life": these are the words spoken by Jan Baudouin de Courtenay, a Polish linguist, guardian of the brothers Juška. The spirit of ethnic culture is further fostered and the memory of the brothers is protected by Arūnas Sniečkus, founder of Juška Museum, and his family. A lot of work has been carried out without any remuneration in the museum building breathing authenticity: only out of love and a great desire to preserve the wealth of the past for future generations. In this unique place, visitors may touch the exhibits, commemorate the calendar festivals and try out the oldest traditions on their own.
