The 1930s in Lithuania were marked by growing social tension and widespread dissatisfaction with living conditions. The global economic crisis of 1929–1933 severely affected the country: agricultural product prices plummeted while industrial goods remained expensive, pushing farmers into hardship. In 1935, this discontent erupted into a large‑scale protest known as the Užnemunė Farmers' Strike. One of the most dramatic events took place on August 27 in Veiveriai, where an attempt to drive non‑striking farmers out of the marketplace escalated into a violent clash with the police. Shots were fired, and two protesters-Juozas Gustaitis and Stasys Veiverys-were killed, while several farmers and police officers were injured.

Today, this difficult yet significant chapter of Lithuania's social history is commemorated by the Memorial Stone to the Participants of the Užnemunė Farmers' Strike. The monument honors those who stood up for their rights and social justice despite the risks they faced. It invites visitors to reflect not only on the tragic events of the strike but also on the broader struggle of the time-society's efforts to achieve fairer economic conditions and the freedom to voice dissent.
