How would you begin telling the history of this magnificent Pažaislis Monastery Ensemble: from the mastery of architecture, from its founders who belonged to the aristocratic Pacas family, or perhaps from the isolated Camaldolese Monks? Still, let us commence from the beginning and reveal the beauty of this mature Baroque structure detail by detail.

Look very carefully whether you see a precise symmetry: the main buildings are grouped proportionally with a 54 meter high dome in the middle distinguishing the church. Nearly 350 years ago, this ensemble was created by talented Italian artists. One of them, Michelangelo Palloni, a painter from Florence, painted 140 impressive frescoes and paintings decorating the altar. Unfortunately, some of the creators did not experience the triumphant moment and they did not have the possibility to see the completed masterpiece. The founders Kristupas Zigmantas Pacas and his wife Klara Izabelė could not see this sacred ensemble completed, too.

The Pacas family who were one of the most influential nobles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, devoted cultural creators and servants of God had a great influence on the history of Lithuanian arts and politics, even feminism. This elite family was devout and patronising. Kristupas Pacas burnt down all the bills related to the Pažaislis Monastery Ensemble before his death and said: "What I gave to God, let Him be the only one who knows it."

The Camaldolese Monks settled in the monastery. The provisions of this group of monks were particularly strict: the monks interacted with each other to a limited extent and devoted most of their time to prayers and reflections on eternity. It is said that the 54 meter tall bell tower is of this height so that the monks who never left the Monastery could look around.

Having overviewed the amazing history of this Monastery and having enhanced the appetite of curiosity, there is only one solution - to see this magnificent beauty in real. Who knows, one might even hear the echo of the copper bell of Pažaislis Church, drowned in the Nemunas...
