Curonian Spit – a place of extraordinary beauty shaped by the sea, wind, and human hands, yet a very fragile and easily vulnerable region. This strip of sand nestled between two bodies of water captivates with its small coastal settlements, unique natural and cultural heritage.

Living amidst the distinctive nature of the Curonian Spit and almost isolated from the mainland, people built original structures here that reflected their worldview. In the villages, the ethnographic architecture of fishermen's houses adorned with carved wooden fences and summer houses harmoniously blends with red-brick churches and schools. One of the most unique elements of the local fishermen's lifestyle is the proudly rotating, colorfully carved weather vanes adorned with symbols.

The vibrancy, spirituality, and special atmosphere of the Curonian Spit landscape are provided by the open spaces visible from the dunes, the changing colors of the lagoon and the Baltic Sea coast. The large dunes covered with mountain pines and the forests planted in the dune and coastal areas paint the Curonian Spit green and protect the settlements from inundation.

In the narrow peninsula's southern part, there are gray, white, dune-covered, and tree-covered coastal dunes. The dry, infertile sands of the Curonian Spit, sudden and frequent weather changes, and strong winds contribute to the diversity of the national park's flora and fauna. In this area, there are insects that cannot be found anywhere else in Lithuania, representatives of southern and steppe species. The Curonian Spit serves as a migratory route for Baltic and White Sea birds, with about 15 million birds passing through it annually.

In the year 2000, the Curonian Spit was recognized as a site of outstanding cultural landscape and included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
