Rusnė – one of the oldest, most unique, and partly intriguing settlements in the Nemunas Delta of Little Lithuania. The name of the largest island in Lithuania was first mentioned in written sources in 1366 when the Teutonic Order gradually began to establish itself along the coast and in the Curonian Lagoon region. Rusnė is a border town located on the island, in the Nemunas Delta, between the Atmata and Skirvytė rivers, with the Pakalnė River flowing through the middle. On the other side of the river is the Kaliningrad Oblast of the Russian Federation.
The only road to Rusnė is a bridge over the Atmata. The first bridge to the island was built in 1914. It was a 2-arch bridge designed by Peter, and remnants of it are still present. After 30 years, in 1974, a new bridge was built next to the old one. It is the largest town in Lithuania located on an island, known for its natural beauty, diversity of birds, and spring floods. The island covers an area of 47 sq. km. In addition to the town of Rusnė, there are the villages of Vorusnė, Šyškrantė, Pakalnė, Uostadvaris, and Skirvytėlė. It is not the only island in the Nemunas Delta; Rusnė Island is surrounded by several smaller ones. The hearts of those who visit Rusnė are melted by the impressive beauty of maritime landscapes. The ensemble of fresh sea breeze, lapping water, and rustling pine trees creates a truly intoxicating natural picture.
Rusnė is famous not only for its landscape or preserved old wooden architecture – the island is rightfully titled the capital of the most delicious smoked fish. Many people flock here every year to taste locally produced specialty dishes and enjoy the pleasantly nose-tickling scent of fresh fish. First-time visitors often return, knowing that they are always welcome in Rusnė. The largest island in Lithuania, with a harmonious combination of water and land entertainment, attracts visitors with various interests – fishing professionals and enthusiasts, ornithologists, researchers of nature and ethnoculture, as well as lovers of peace and water. There is certainly no shortage of active water activities here – you can fish, sail boats, rowboats, or kayaks. Moreover, Rusnė Island is the most attractive center for ice fishing in the Curonian Lagoon.
