Having boarded the funicular wagon of oak, one instantly gets transferred to the inter - war Lithuania. The cherry - coloured lift begins going up the hill via the romantic rails at a speed of 2 m / s. In just 1 minute and 8 seconds, the funicular door opens and the passengers disperse - some of them will come back home after a long day's work, others will trudge to the Aleksotas Observation Deck to enjoy the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris and the city's panorama.

Kaunas is the only city in the Baltic States that has preserved this unique technical heritage. There are even two funiculars in the temporary capital: one goes to Žaliakalnis and the other goes to the already mentioned Aleksotas. How did these lifts that belong to the oldest European operating lifts emerge in Kaunas?

The Aleksotas funicular began to operate in Kaunas as of 1935 with the consent of President Antanas Smetona. It was intended to provide easier means for the residents, workers and students to commute to various educational and study institutions, workplaces and homes in Aleksotas. The funiculars were the first motor vehicle powered by electricity, as trolleybuses appeared in Kaunas only 30 years later.

Trips by Aleksotas funicular were popular not only in the interwar period. In 1960 it was used by a record number of passengers, amounting to even 894 thousand of people! Currently it is used daily by approximately 300-400 travellers a day. This technical monument, which has been operating for more than 80 years, delights both guests and the local people, and reveals the beautiful panorama of Kaunas and the red roofs of the Old Town.
