A bronze memorial plaque dedicated to the coronavirus was installed in 2020 in the pavement near the Raseiniai Hospital. A mobile COVID‑19 testing point operated in the adjacent parking area. The Raseiniai District Municipality was the first among Lithuania’s 60 municipalities to declare a local quarantine.
At the center of the plaque, a fly with a cross on its head is depicted. This is an old medieval symbol used during various calamities (pandemics, plagues), representing evil forces or even demons. The fly is also considered a harbinger of death, while the cross on its head symbolizes hope. Hope was the foundation of this pandemic that swept across the world — hope to recover, hope to live, hope to develop new vaccines more quickly, and more.
The author of the memorial plaque is E. Pauza.
