In 1989, scientists from the French National Geographic Institute determined that the geographical centre of Europe is located in Lithuania, just 26 km north of Vilnius. The site is marked by a striking monument created by renowned Lithuanian sculptor Gediminas Jokūbonis to commemorate Lithuania's accession to the European Union. The monument features a white granite column crowned with a ring of stars, symbolising European unity.
