Karaites, a nation speaking Turkic, settled in Trakai in the end of 14th century. The official date of Karaites migration to Trakai is 1397 - 1398. The name of the nation is derived from Karaites faith. The faith is based on the Old Testament and has Islamic elements. Kenessa (in Karaites language a temple) - a building of Karaites cult has remained in Trakai. In 1894 a new wooden kenessa was built. In 1903 - 1904 kenessa was done up, and did not change visualy since then. Kenessa can be oserved not only from the exterior, but one canalso go in and listen to the story about the history and religion of this small nation, narrated by an old Karaite.
The houses of Trakai Karaites stand in a compact territory. For a long time, this part of the town was called the Little town. Since 1441, the Karaites community was self-governing. The Karaites houses are easy to distinguish: mostly, they are standing endwise with three windows to the street's side.
In the restaurants of Karaites dishes, one can partake of national Karaites meals, firstly "Kibinai", to taste traditional liqueur "Krupnikas", made according to a special receipt.
