Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas (1918–1957) was one of the most prominent leaders of the Lithuanian armed resistance, a signatory of the 1949 Declaration of February 16, Deputy Chairman and later Acting Chairman of the LLKS Council Presidium, Commander of Defense Forces, and Commander of the Southern Lithuania partisan region. Born in the United States and raised in Lithuania from 1921, he became deeply involved in civic and military life: he worked as a teacher, led a local unit during the June Uprising of 1941, and, after the second Soviet occupation, joined the partisans under the codename Vanagas (“Hawk”). He united partisan units in the Merkinė and Alovė areas, commanded the Merkys Battalion and later the entire Dainava partisan district, and actively contributed to underground press publishing. In 1949 he participated in the historic gathering of partisan leaders in Minaičiai, signed the Declaration of February 16, and became one of the key figures of the national resistance leadership. Despite constant persecution, he continued the struggle until 1956, when he was betrayed, arrested, brutally tortured, and executed in Vilnius in 1957.

At this site, where the Ramanauskas family homestead once stood, the large stone foundations of the former house remain-silent witnesses to the life of a man who became a symbol of Lithuania’s fight for freedom. In 2016, an oak memorial pillar was erected here, along with a small access path, creating a respectful and contemplative space to honor Vanagas and his wife, Birutė Mažeikaitė-Ramanauskienė, herself a partisan and resistance liaison. This is a place that invites visitors to reflect on the unbroken spirit of the Lithuanian resistance and to pay tribute to those who fought for the nation’s independence.
