Jeruzalė Pond lies within the grounds of the Verkiai Manor Estate. Verkiai Manor Park is one of the oldest and largest landscape parks in Lithuania. A defining feature of the park is its interconnected system of ponds and canals, of which Jeruzalė Pond forms an integral part. The water bodies served to regulate and replenish water levels throughout the estate. Some of the canals and ponds were stocked with fish, trout were raised for export, and water was channelled into the garden canals. A sawmill, a paper mill and several water mills once operated along the waterways.
The streams and dams were primarily of agricultural significance, yet they also lent beauty to the surrounding landscape. Jeruzalė Pond was shaped by harnessing the natural terrain and the valleys of the local streams.
Jeruzalė Pond and the park that surrounds it represent a valuable natural sanctuary within the city of Vilnius, distinguished by remarkable biological diversity. The distinctive terrain and microclimate provide ideal conditions for woodland, meadow and wetland habitats. Many of the trees growing in the park are over a century old, and one of the oldest linden trees in Vilnius stands here in Jeruzalė Park.
The marshy areas of the park are dominated by wetland and bog vegetation. Visitors may observe a rich variety of birds that find a natural refuge in these wetlands, as well as wildlife such as the Eurasian beaver. With a little luck, one might also catch a glimpse of a badger, an otter or a pine marten.
