1635 or 1636 after the establishment of the Franciscan monastery, Jews began to stay in Valkininkai town. They received the privilege to keep a distillery. A two-tower church with the buildings of a 2-storey U-plan monastery was built on the western outskirts of Valkininkai, behind Merkys river. This complex of Renaissance and Baroque architecture became the most important dominant of the town and its surroundings.

1832 the monastery was abolished, and an army unit was housed there. Until 1867 - 1868 the monastery house was adapted for barracks; the church towers were demolished, the other part was rebuilt into orthodox church. The town and its surroundings have lost a lot.

1920 - 1939 Valkininkai were occupied by Poland, a number of people emigrated. 1939 town was returned to Lithuania. During World War II former monastery was exploded.
