There are 7 lighthouses in Lithuania, both Baltic Sea and Curonian Lagoon - restored, authentic and still working. Most of these lighthouses are operational and are not only used for night navigation or fog-time, but they are also used for tourism and there are many other points of interest around them.

The Lighthouse Route is a great excuse to visit the entire Lithuanian seaside Curonian Lagoon coast area.

Šventoji Lighthouse
Lighthouses • Švyturio g., Šventoji, Palangos sav.

The 39-metre-high, metal-structured Šventoji Lighthouse was built in 1957 and has a signal visibility of 31 km. During its entire lifetime, the Šventoji Lighthouse has never been out for more than one hour. There is no access to the lighthouse and the area is fenced. The lighthouse, which is still in use, underwent a major reconstruction in 2000 and new and modern equipment was installed.

The oldest lighthouse in Lithuania - Klaipėda Lighthouse was built in 1796 and was one of the first lighthouses on the north-eastern Baltic Sea coast. At that time, only the lighthouses in Danzig and Travemünde were older. The lighthouse was destroyed during the Second World War and immediately rebuilt, and in 1953 it was rebuilt and improved again. The current lighthouse is 44 m high and the signal can be seen 33 kilometres away.

The Juodkrantė lighthouse was built in 1950 and is almost a kilometre away from the sea. The height of the lighthouse is only 20 metres, but the Witch's Hill raises it to a total height of 75 metres. Still in use today, the signal can be seen from 33 kilometres away.

Nida Lighthouse has had two lifes - the first lasted from its construction in 1874 until the end of the Second World War, and the second began during the Soviet era, with the construction in 1953 of the 29-metre-high lighthouse that still stands today. At the time the lighthouse was built, Mount Urbas was a bare 51 m high sand dune, which was only planted in 1870. In the 19th century, the old lighthouse not only showed the way for ships, but also warned of approaching storms - the lighthouse keeper used to hang flags, which would let the fishermens of the Curonian Lagoon know when a storm was approaching.

The current, automatically operating concrete tower of the Nida Lighthouse is 79 metres above sea level. It sends out white light signals that can be seen as far as 41 km away. A special conventional signal (2 short flashes and 1 long flash) indicates that there is no harbour from the sea side.

The Pervalka lighthouse has been showing fishermen the way to the shore for more than a hundred years. This lighthouse is special because it is the only one in the Curonian Lagoon that is not located on land, but 260 metres from the shore, on a small artificial island. The 14-metre high Pervalka lighthouse is now automatic and the signal can be seen 13 kilometres away. In favourable conditions, the lighthouse can be climbed or swimed to on your own.

The first 11-metre high wooden lighthouse on Cape Ventė was built in 1837 because of the dangerous rocky shoal nearby. The current brick lighthouse was built in 1852. The signal is visible from 3.5 kilometres away. Nowadays, the lighthouse is mainly used as a beacon for fishing enthusiasts and it attracts tourists who can climb up and admire the beautiful landscape. From the lighthouse's observation deck, you can see Preila, the golden dunes and the panorama of Nida in the south-west of the Curonian Spit.

The 18-metre-high Uostadvaris lighthouse was built on Rusnė island in the second half of the 19th century, at an important shipping point opposite the mouth of the Minija river. Although the lighthouse has survived to this day, it has long since fallen out of use for its original purpose. It is now a monument of technical history and also serves as an observation tower.

The lighthouses route can be started from any edge lighthouse - Šventoji, Uostadvaris or Nida.
