A magnificent, more than five metres high, this Monument to M. K. Čiurlionis was erected in the very centre of the SPA town, near Nemunas Promenade. The distance to the Monument allowing alienating from the bustle of the town testifies to respect deserved by the most renowned artist of Lithuania.

The Monument was designed in gloomy Soviet times, the year 1975, to commemorate the centenary of the birth of this man who demonstrated his genius in the spheres of painting and music. In record time – approximately half a year – the Monument was created by the sculptor Vladas Vildžiūnas, a winner of the National Prize. The square layout was designed by the architect Rimantas Povilas Dičius. In 1976, this duo of creators was awarded the National Prize of the Republic for this joint solution.

This Monument is one of the famous sculptural works of V. Vildžiūnas, and, according to art professionals, it is one of the most handsome monuments in this country. The sculptor remembers how he had wanted to depict Čiurlionis looking into the unknown spaces: "looking into the far-stretching distances, as if viewing from a high mountain, watching from the towers built by him in his own imagination".

The red granite foundation of the Monument is adorned with a monogram; the path leading from the Church to the Monument of M. K. Čiurlionis has been decorated in red granite as well. This path can be discerned by the sharp-eyed visitors to Druskininkai only.

Contemporaries remember some funny details of the Monument erection process. This place had hosted the sculpture of the Soviet partisan Marija Melnikaitė which had been moved to the courtyard of Pušynas (A Pine-Forest) sanatorium, existed at that time. Removal caused anger from the side of Communist party commanders. Due to this action, Druskininkai witnessed different inspecting commissions, the number of which reached maybe five, and, consequently, lots of correspondents were flocking to the Resort town. To erect the Monument to the Artist, building materials of first necessity were needed, and to find such materials lots of enthusiasm and ingenuity were required. By the way, you can look at the post-war sculpture of the Soviet partisan in Grūto Park.
