Before the Second World War, private houses and house of traders and craftmen used to stand in the place of the square. They were bombed during the first raid of German aircrafts. After the war, the houses were not rebuilt and a square were formed instead. In 1956 it was given the title of the Square of May 1. In 1977 the area was refurbished and a fountain was installed. In 2012 the square of the Old Town was reconstructed. The newly installed colourful fountain was decorated with lyrics of poet Jurgis Kunčinas.
